Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you and your families had a lovely holiday season and are settling nicely into 2024. I’ve taken some time over the past few months to just seek the face of God. In the place of prayer, he’s revealed that there’s a deeper level of intimacy he wants to bring his children into this year because he’s calling them to live fully awake in their identity, their purpose, and their assignment in the kingdom of God. As always, God exposed me before he allowed me to help others. The whole thing started in the fall when God told me to watch and pray and build an altar through consistency. However, like the disciples in the garden, I couldn’t seem to stay awake long enough to complete the task. These were late-night prayers, so I thought I was just sleepy, and justifiably so, but God opened my eyes to the truth. He said you think you’re just tired, but this is not natural. It’s spiritual. The enemy is luring you to sleep physically to put you to sleep spiritually, and you’re falling for it every time. I need you to wake up. (Does God ever just come for your whole life? Just me?)
God began to show me that I wasn’t alone; I was part of a sleepy generation. I started making all kinds of excuses because health is wealth! I was like, “God! Sleep is essential! I thought you wanted me to be whole!” Of course, God wasn’t talking about physical sleep. He said you are so drowsy when it comes to the things of the spirit, and then you try to cover it up with a message of grace. That’s all well and good, but if the Kingdom suffers violence and the violent are asleep, then no wonder the enemy is having his way with our mental health and relationships. The believer is made for an abundant life, but that life requires us to live awake.
What happens when you sleep? You lose consciousness. You engage in an alternate reality that is less real, less true than your everyday waking life. But some people also begin to walk around while they’re asleep. In this altered state of consciousness, the sleepwalker has no idea what they’re doing. They look awake. They look like they understand kingdom principles. They look like they have an intimate relationship with God. They have a form of Godliness, but they are not fully there. If the unbeliever is the walking dead, then the sleepwalker is the believer who is living ignorant of the power of the Holy Spirit and the reality of the Kingdom of God. This will not do. In 2024, we gotta wake up.
The things that wake a person up are light and sound. When you draw nearer to the King of Glory, the light of his presence exposes you; the sound of his voice calls to you, and there is no way for you to remain in a slumber. I believe God is making some people restless enough to press into more of his presence. 2024 is not the year of the sleepy Christian. God is calling out to his people, saying,
“Awake, O sleeper,
rise up from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”
- Ephesians 5:14
I don’t think Scripture ever refers to unbelievers as asleep. Only believers are asleep because sleep is like a temporary death- you lose consciousness and awareness, and you have no control over yourself. You’re completely vulnerable when you’re asleep, but you’re still alive. As a believer, you’ve already been resurrected to new life in Christ, but are you living awake? Are you fully conscious of how the Holy Spirit is moving through you? When you’re sleeping, your assignment is going undone, and your mission is paused, but my God, when you wake up?! When you are awakened by the light and the life of this world, you can be about your Father’s business and walk in the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God is waiting for the sons and daughters of God to wake up. You’ve been asleep too long. It’s time to wake up.
The Awakening starts tomorrow. I hope you’ll join me.
